Tomboyfriend “Almost/Always”

Be my Tomboyfriend.

Whoa, man. What’s with Toronto? Is everyone walking the streets there an eccentric, authentic songwriter? I need to go there. Road trip, anyone? Maybe we can attend a Murder Folk Night or get some cheap Poutine at Sneaky Dees, and observe those Canadian kids with discerning musical taste– take some notes, get some e-mails. This is serious stuff going on.

Here we have the second Canadian band this week I’ve been enamored with at first listen.: Tomboyfriend. I present to you this preview track from the not-released-just-yet-but-probably-amazing Don’t Go to School.

Before you push play, can I ask: Do you like The Pixies? I mean, do you crave that off-the-cuff, abstract storytelling in a song that builds and builds, where the most appropriate and satisfying release comes from a chorus that essentially just goes: Hey-la? Ok, good.

Lyric sample:

He met her at a shooting gallery
Like everything about him
His timing was bad
And she’d just won
The fourth largest
Movie-inspired plush porcupine

Take Comfort In “Wild Honey…”

In a follow up to last fall’s Year In The Kingdom, J. Tillman offers listeners another soothing folk masterpiece with his single “Wild Honey Never Stolen”. He is an incredibly patient artist, allowing the track to flow at its own pace, and adding only what is necessary to see it to the end. The individual piano notes particularly stand out as clever additions to the powerful chorus. If nothing else, one feels safe upon listening to “Wild Honey…”.  It is a literal short and sweet folk ballad, and Tillman’s voice will envelop you, if you let it.

Vampire Weekend Cover Rancid + More

If you aren’t yet already sick of the recent trend of what feels like every Grammy nominated/mainstream artist teaming up to record some pathos-inducing, saccharine radio hit of yesteryear for a good cause (text HAITI to 90999), here are some decent covers recorded recently by some of your favorite bands just for the hell of it.

Vampire Weekend: Ruby Soho (Rancid Cover)

Cymbals Eat Guitars: Ballad Of Big Nothing (Elliot Smith Cover)

Local Natives: Warning Sign (Talking Heads Cover)

The Muslims (The Soft Pack): Fences (Phoenix Cover)

Major Lazer: Halo (Beyonce Cover)
