Bear in Heaven Make Tracks Across The U.S.

With a slew of sold out performances under their belt, including Sunday night’s stellar Terminal 5 set in support of Metric, Bear in Heaven continue their tour de force this spring and summer all across the United States.  Once a six piece ensemble, and now astutely stripped down to four like-minded elements, the band carries on stronger than ever.  All current members of the band reside in Brooklyn, New York, but originally hail from Southern States,  Alabama or Georgia.  Their latest offering, “Beast Rest Forth Mouth”, is their best work to date, yielding blissful tracks such as “Lovesick Teenagers” and “Wholehearted Mess”.  I’m a big fan of Bear in Heaven’s decision to let buyers choose their own LP colorway by way of Home Tapes Website.  Although I do agree it may be more fun to leave the fate of the LP color in the hands of the Home Tapes staff (cough, cough).

… Whether by way of musical charm or album color selection, Bear in Heaven never fails to surprise. Continue reading »

Mon Khmer @ Union Pool – 2.10.10

“These guys look like they’re ready to play,” someone noted, as the guys in Mon Khmer set up the last few pieces of gear, and appearances proved accurate.  In addition to creating a cohesive minimalist rock sound with Hammarsing’s clear, direct vocals, they proved capable of switching things up.

The Brooklyn-based quintet was kinetic on Wednesday at Union Pool, guitarists Hammarsing and Elias Meister locking into the round, hypnotic sort of dual guitar riffing typical of more repetitive bands, only to nonchalantly depart to more whimsical, energetic territory. The most engaging moments on this danceable journey came in the form of great dynamic shifts between restrained, orderly playing and full throttle noisy interludes, from which they would calmly return, proving to be in control of this thing they channeled, not jamming but playing and having a jarring effect on the crowd.

  • Bright Light Bright Light

When one of our favorite sites for pop music (Popjustice) wrote that they’d signed on with Virgin Records to release some of the amazing tunes they write about, there was potential for great things. They haven’t disappointed.
  • The Go-Betweens: Australia's Most Influential Indie Band Of All Time?

On a recent business trip to Brisbane [the state capital of Queensland, Australia], a bout of insomnia saw me walking the streets of the inner-city in the early hours of the morning. Heading north, a prominent sign caught my eye: GO BETWEEN BRIDGE. Lodged in the back of my mind was a recent newspaper story, detailing the re-naming of an existing vehicle & foot passenger bridge [linking Brisbane’s inner-city to the suburbs] in honour of one of the city’s most popular indie bands of the 1980’s.
