With a slew of sold out performances under their belt, including Sunday night’s stellar Terminal 5 set in support of Metric, Bear in Heaven continue their tour de force this spring and summer all across the United States. Once a six piece ensemble, and now astutely stripped down to four like-minded elements, the band carries on stronger than ever. All current members of the band reside in Brooklyn, New York, but originally hail from Southern States, Alabama or Georgia. Their latest offering, “Beast Rest Forth Mouth”, is their best work to date, yielding blissful tracks such as “Lovesick Teenagers” and “Wholehearted Mess”. I’m a big fan of Bear in Heaven’s decision to let buyers choose their own LP colorway by way of Home Tapes Website. Although I do agree it may be more fun to leave the fate of the LP color in the hands of the Home Tapes staff (cough, cough).

“These guys look like they’re ready to play,” someone noted, as the guys in Mon Khmer set up the last few pieces of gear, and appearances proved accurate. In addition to creating a cohesive minimalist rock sound with Hammarsing’s clear, direct vocals, they proved capable of switching things up.
The Brooklyn-based quintet was kinetic on Wednesday at Union Pool, guitarists Hammarsing and Elias Meister locking into the round, hypnotic sort of dual guitar riffing typical of more repetitive bands, only to nonchalantly depart to more whimsical, energetic territory. The most engaging moments on this danceable journey came in the form of great dynamic shifts between restrained, orderly playing and full throttle noisy interludes, from which they would calmly return, proving to be in control of this thing they channeled, not jamming but playing and having a jarring effect on the crowd.
