Bright Light Bright Light – New York show and ticket giveaway!

Paper Trail favorite and all-around pop wonder Bright Light Bright Light is playing a show at the Cake Shop here in New York on January 23rd! And I have a pair of tickets to give away to one reader!

Find out how to enter at the end of this post, but for a bit more about the show: Bright Light Bright Light will be playing a solo piano set that will, in all likelihood, be amazing. I saw Rod in a similar set-up last year and while there’s no doubt that his full production stuff is brilliant, the stripped-down set was really special.

One of my favorite things about what Rod’s done with Bright Light Bright Light is that he manages to strike that perfect balance between thoughtful lyrics and pop melodies, and this is a great chance to hear the songs in a different light.

The show will features songs from his upcoming debut album Make Me Believe In Hope and will double as a launch for his new EP Blueprints 1. The EP has four tracks from the album in a quite beautiful solo piano rendition with guests vocals from people like Stefan of The Sound of Arrows, so if you like the show (or can’t make it but like this sort of thing) it’ll be available to purchase from the 23rd.

Blueprints 1 will include:
Blueprint [with Sunday Girl]
Debris [with Allison Pierce]
Cry At Films [with Del Marquis]
Disco Moment [with Stefan of Sound Of Arrows]

While he’s in New York, Bright Light Bright Light is also DJing on January 25th at Eastern Bloc.

For a chance to win a pair of tickets to Bright Light Bright Light’s show at the Cake Shop on January 23rd (doors are at 8:30pm) email me at amanda@papertrailmusic.com by January 15th with the subject line “BLBL Ticket Giveaway”. I’ll randomly choose and email a winner on the 16th. Best of luck!

Bright Light Bright Light – Video for ‘Disco Moment’

New music from Bright Light Bright Light!

This time it’s in the form of a video for his upcoming single ‘Disco Moment’.

Like Pet Shop Boys and Robyn before him, Welsh producer Rod Thomas is no novice in creating a synthpop track that simultaneously makes you want to dance and cry a little bit, and with ‘Disco Moment’ he’s further exploring that line between the two.

Rod discussed the track with the Guardian, explaining‘A “disco moment” is that time you have when you’re having the time of your life, like when your favourite song comes on in a club, or when everything feels amazing and you’re like “life is great!” and the song is about watching someone you’re meant to be close to have that moment in front of you, but you’re not included.’

It’s very much that moment of realization that a relationship is over, with Rod singing “You make it so hard to be around / It’s no surprise that the line is breaking up, that we’re breaking up” as synths pound and pulse in the background.

The video features dancers wearing television sets on their heads and close-ups of them in a state where they’re seemingly not sure whether to laugh at the irony or cry at the injustice. It’s a pretty accurate representation of the lyrics. Watch it below.

‘Disco Moment’ is out digitally on August 7th.

Bright Light Bright Light – Video for ‘How To Make A Heart’

Bright Light Bright Light’s latest teaser for his upcoming album premiered just in time for Valentine’s Day. It came in the form of a video for ‘How To Make A Heart’ and it is amazing.

It’s not the quintessential ‘love’ song one might expect around Valentine’s Day though, with the song wryly noting “And now there’s one more broken heart in the world / Well, who wants to hear about it?” But we wouldn’t expect anything less from Bright Light Bright Light (aka Welsh producer/musician Rod Thomas).

Instead ‘How To Make A Heart’ is a well-thought out and produced electro stomper of a track with a pounding drumbeat, blips and bleeps and lyrical insights like “It’s funny in such a small room / There can be so much space between us”.

The video, directed by Gavin Leisfield, is quite tragic and beautiful and well, it features animated robots and we won’t spoil it. Watch it below.

Finally, if that weren’t all amazing enough, there’s a free download of the video here.

Bright Light Bright Light – ‘Love Part II’

When one of our favorite sites for pop music (Popjustice) wrote that they’d signed on with Virgin Records to release some of the amazing tunes they write about, there was potential for great things. They haven’t disappointed.

Popjustice Hi-Fi’s most recent (well, their second) output from the partnership is the first single by Bright Light Bright Light, ‘Love Part II.’

With a pulsing bass line that builds into an insanely melodic chorus, it’s an all-around wonder of a pop tune by Welsh singer and producer Rod Thomas, who’s remixed artists like Ellie Goulding and Kelis. ‘Love Part II’ is a love song at its core, with Thomas proclaiming “Do what you want with me / And let everybody see / I’m in love again / I’m in love again” over waves of synths. Though it’s only his first official single, already it’s evident that there’s a level to his songwriting and production that sets him apart.
