The Village Voice has announced the addition of five bands to this year’s Siren Festival lineup. The Night Marchers, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Earl Greyhound, Screaming Females and Wye Oak will join already announced acts like Matt and Kim, Ted Leo And The Pharmacists, the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Surfer Blood and Harlem at the Coney Island fest. This year’s concert, which is scheduled for July 17 from 12 p.m. – 9p.m., marks the free, outdoor festival’s 10th anniversary.
Drawing in 100,000 plus music fans each year Siren has allowed over 120 bands to make their mark in the last decade and for this special occasion, Matt And Kim and Ted Leo And The Pharmacists will be returning to perform for a second time representing Siren’s roots. As always, The Siren Music Festival is free of charge and open to all ages. While excited to hear the festival continues on at Coney Island at this familiar destination, I can’t help but be disappointed with the unimaginative booking for the event. Ted Leo and Matt and Kim are widely recognized as top notch performers, but the fact that Siren has reverted back to these artists for a second go-round leaves me less than satisfied, and not exactly foaming at the mouth to attend. With that said, I do applaud them for their choices of Surfer Blood and Cymbals Eat Guitars, two bands worthy of this particular showcase in my book.
