RECAP: Bonnaroo 2010 – Day 2

As the heat increases on Day 2 at Bonnaroo, so does the amount of music. It becomes a full-time job attempting to strategize whom to see while not succumbing to the outlandish temperatures. Friday was particularly packed with well-established musicians, and then of course there was the late night conflict that had everyone scratching their heads. The day began with eager patrons lining up for Conan O’Brien’s first set of the weekend as early as 5:00AM.

The Bird & The Bee interpret Hall & Oates

The Bird and The Bee - Interpreting the Masters, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall & John Oates

In their new album “Interpreting the Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall and John Oates”, the LA-based  jazzy synthpop duo The Bird and The Bee have, as one might infer from the title, made an all out, no-holds-barred tribute album to the greatest hits of the 70’s & 80’s hit makers Hall & Oates. At their best, covers can be  dazzling reinterpretations of the original song where the artist makes the listener see the song through a different prism (here’s a good example).  At their worst,it can be a bad xerox copy. Fortunately, this is miles away from a copier.

Private Eyes – The Bird and The Bee

Here we are delivered good solid and interesting versions of the H&O catalog.  All the hits are here – “Private Eyes”, “Sara Smile”, “Rich Girl”, “Maneater” (which features guest vocalist Shirley Manson of Garbage).  It’s true – Hall & Oates wrote some great songs 20 odd years ago, and the updated production and smooth female vocals peel back the years and let the songwriting shine through.

You can listen to the whole album over on last.fm.

  • The Go-Betweens: Australia's Most Influential Indie Band Of All Time?

On a recent business trip to Brisbane [the state capital of Queensland, Australia], a bout of insomnia saw me walking the streets of the inner-city in the early hours of the morning. Heading north, a prominent sign caught my eye: GO BETWEEN BRIDGE. Lodged in the back of my mind was a recent newspaper story, detailing the re-naming of an existing vehicle & foot passenger bridge [linking Brisbane’s inner-city to the suburbs] in honour of one of the city’s most popular indie bands of the 1980’s.
