For being such a young project, Francis and the Lights is big. Front man Francis Farewell Starlite has not only a big name, but a big presence. He’s the kind of big presence to sit down to a piano, compose a really simple tune that ends up sounding epic and timeless, with the help of some celestial electronic beats and production. Think of big gods of rock like Peter Gabriel or Steve Perry, but in Protostar stage– you know, not quite to Super Nova, but moving fast and producing a lot of heat. The newly released It’ll Be Better (2010 Cantora Records) is the band’s first full length album, but the sound and feel is familiar in it’s classic rock sensibility. This is no surprise, as the band itself officially came into existence after a live performance of the album The Immortal Otis Redding in full. A big tribute for a band not even fully formed yet. Flash forward a few short years, and Francis has snagged the opening spot for MGMT’s Radio City Music Hall performance. A pretty appropriate match, I’d say. MGMT came onto the scene with a big bang themselves, spinning spectacularly into the limelight over just the past three years. And now these lite-brite bands take the historical stage at Radio City Music Hall. Check out this video for “It’s Alright Darling” from Francis and the Light’s new album, It’ll Be Better, and see if it doesn’t make the night a bit brighter. Tickets on sale now for the Francis and the Lights and MGMT at Radio City Music Hall, August 17th!
