Jónsi at Terminal 5 5/08

Jónsi just completed a two-night stand at Terminal 5. The show on Saturday began with the unreleased track “Stars In Still Water”, a nearly solo piece that features Jónsi and his incredible falsetto. And his voice really is as good as his illustrious recording career would suggest. He is able to sustain a note for what seems like minutes, so long that one begins to imagine that it is not a human producing the tones.

At first glance the stage seems rather standard, complete with a brown backdrop and some intelligent lights. As the show slowly begins, it starts to take shape three songs in for Kolniður, where the backdrop seems to catch fire and slowly burn away. From this point on the visual aspect of the production takes over. There are nearly three dimensional animals prancing around the musicians, multi-colored smoke blowing around stage, and plants springing to life from the hope that Jónsi is able to bring to all living things with his music.

Jonsi Releases Video for ‘Go Do’

Not only does Jónsi look like the many birds in his first attempt at a solo music video, for ‘Go Do’ the opening track of his album ‘Go’, you almost get the feeling that he wants to be one of them. The way that he perches on trees and windowsills likens our feathered friends in such a way that it is impossible not to draw some meaning from it. The feeling goes hand in hand with the song, a quite literal message of go…do (“always know that we can do anything”), and perhaps it would be easier for Jónsi to go do whatever is in his creative head, were he a bird. It is an uplifting and joyous occasion, and it comes quite a distance from his Sigur Rós roots. Altogether the art direction is quite impressive, a seamless integration of high-definition crisp images and out of focus ones that are simply enjoyable to absorb.

  • The Go-Betweens: Australia's Most Influential Indie Band Of All Time?

On a recent business trip to Brisbane [the state capital of Queensland, Australia], a bout of insomnia saw me walking the streets of the inner-city in the early hours of the morning. Lodged in the back of my mind was a recent newspaper story, detailing the re-naming of an existing vehicle & foot passenger bridge [linking Brisbane’s inner-city to the suburbs] in honour of one of the city’s most popular indie bands of the 1980’s.
