MGMT- “Congratulations” Review

In the wake of the huge success of Oracular Spectacular, MGMT faced something of an identity crisis.  Their critical and financial victories were clashing with their traditional image as a self-proclaimed “indie” band, demolishing their authenticity in the process.  Even as they were signed by Columbia and hobnobbed with the likes of Paul McCartney, they starkly refused to refer to themselves as anything other than independent.

Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser appeared to be in a childish denial about the whole idea of finally having made it as a band, suffering from the delusion that they would somehow be better off if they had doomed themselves to some sort of blissful obscurity instead.

MGMT’s “Congratulations” Due Out in April

MGMT will release its sophomore full-length, “Congratulations”, via Columbia Records on April 13. The follow-up to the band’s 2008 Grammy-nominated “Oracular Spectacular” was recorded in upstate New York, Brooklyn and Malibu and Spaceman 3’s Sonic Boom (Peter Kember) served as co-producer. MGMT also worked with Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann and Royal Trux’s Jennifer Herrema, who recorded guest vocals.

Tour dates in support of the new effort have yet to be announced, though the band is booked to play both the Coachella and Bamboozle festivals.
