Mt. Desolation announce album, North American tour dates

Mt. Desolation is officially listed as a side project of Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin of Keane, with the pair reportedly coming up with the idea to make a country album during a late-night pub conversation.

Calling it a side project doesn’t really capture its scale though, because while primarily their work, Rice-Oxley and Quin enlist the help of members of bands ranging from Noah and the Whale to The Killers to Mumford & Sons.  In that regard it becomes almost like one giant, amazing super group.

Aside from live recordings, there are only a couple official tracks available on the web right now – their self-titled debut isn’t out until mid-October – but already it’s pretty clear that Mt. Desolation finds the pair making a blend of country rock with some pop sensibilities that’s largely removed from their Keane work. They’re using a piano and guitars, but also fiddles, banjos and distorted theremins.

Mumford & Sons announce North American tour dates (+ second Terminal 5 show)

A few of us here at Paper Trail love Mumford & Sons. I’ve somehow missed every show they’ve played here, but the London foursome is coming back to the States again in the fall, so this may be my chance…

Mumford & Sons will be playing a pretty comprehensive tour of the US with a few stops up north in Canada. Due to the Terminal 5 show on November 15 selling out so quickly, they’ve added one further date to the end of the tour. The band will now be playing there on November 16 as well – that show goes on sale on Friday (August 20). Anyone planning to head to the Chicago show should also note that the venue has been upgraded from the Vic Theatre to the Riviera Theatre.

RECAP: Bonnaroo 2010 Day 3

The third day picked up right where Friday left off. As many festival-goers attempted to recover and conserve energy at the halfway point, big names such as Norah Jones and Jimmy Cliff performed early in the Tennessee sun. Norah Jones was very impressive here mixing up her set list with a variety of genres and some clever covers (The Kinks’ “Stranger” was especially good). Immediately afterwards The Avett Brothers took the same stage and day three was off to a great start.

Mumford & Sons announce Canada dates, full US tour

Fresh off a few dates that included a sold out show at the Bowery Ballroom, the UK’s Mumford & Sons have announced their first full-length North American tour.

The indie folk rockers spawned from the same London antifolk scene that gave us Noah and the Whale and Laura Marling are set to play 23 shows in just over a month this May/June.

  • The Go-Betweens: Australia's Most Influential Indie Band Of All Time?

On a recent business trip to Brisbane [the state capital of Queensland, Australia], a bout of insomnia saw me walking the streets of the inner-city in the early hours of the morning. Heading north, a prominent sign caught my eye: GO BETWEEN BRIDGE. Lodged in the back of my mind was a recent newspaper story, detailing the re-naming of an existing vehicle & foot passenger bridge [linking Brisbane’s inner-city to the suburbs] in honour of one of the city’s most popular indie bands of the 1980’s.
