Mecca Lecca / Paper Trail Showcase at Pianos – March 7th

Quick shout out and thank you to all the bands who performed quite well last night at the Mecca Lecca / Paper Trail Showcase at Piano’s on the Lower East Side.  The local acts included Guitars, Invisible Days, and Friend Roulette, plus Norway’s Pictures of Florence Henderson. The majority of these artists are on their way down to Austin for SXSW, and we wish them all much luck among the stampeding herd.

TICKET GIVEAWAY: Peggy Sue @ Pianos 6/10/10!

Man, is it HOT. I mean, almost unbearable, right? You know, it’s nights like these, when my generic 99-cent store window fan just isn’t cutting through the butter-thick humidity, and my bedroom starts to feels like a subway station, that make me wish I had saved some Misc./Entertainment cash from last paycheck to go drink ice cold beers and sweat it out in the back room of a small bar, while some soulful, dust-bowlesque, sultry, speakeasy-type music fills the room. You know what I mean? You do?

Well then, do I have just the fix.

Piano’s 3/12/10: Drink Up Buttercup, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, No Place & Bruce Peninsula

Bruce Peninsula: What a lovely surprise.

I’m always early for everything, and constantly find myself walking the block around venues on nights I review shows. But on Saturday night at Piano’s, I got up the courage to walk into the back room confidently, and take  a cozy seat in back on a faux tree stump for sound check.

Xylos & Dinosaur Feathers @ Piano’s

Xylos in the doorway

I went to Pianos Tuesday night to see Dinosaur Feathers and Xylos, who opened for Blair’s weekly residency.

It is clear that Dinosaur Feathers does not yet have the following it deserves. I was turned off as soon as I walked into the performance space. There was more gear than people on the floor. Except for a few girls, the handful of other audience members seemed like they had either stumbled in by chance or had come early for Xylos, the subsequent band. Initially, I blamed the impending snowstorm for the lack of fans at this buzz band’s show, but the room filled up for Xylos and by that time the snow was really starting to come down.

  • Bright Light Bright Light

When one of our favorite sites for pop music (Popjustice) wrote that they’d signed on with Virgin Records to release some of the amazing tunes they write about, there was potential for great things. They haven’t disappointed.
  • The Go-Betweens: Australia's Most Influential Indie Band Of All Time?

On a recent business trip to Brisbane [the state capital of Queensland, Australia], a bout of insomnia saw me walking the streets of the inner-city in the early hours of the morning. Heading north, a prominent sign caught my eye: GO BETWEEN BRIDGE. Lodged in the back of my mind was a recent newspaper story, detailing the re-naming of an existing vehicle & foot passenger bridge [linking Brisbane’s inner-city to the suburbs] in honour of one of the city’s most popular indie bands of the 1980’s.

Fresh off the release of a self-titled EP, and a successful stint at SXSW, Pretty Good Dance Moves took time out of their busy schedule to talk music, television, and rather good dance moves.
