Mecca Lecca Turns Record Label – Interview with Jonny Leather

After spending years championing the cause of local bands as promoter, photographer, and blogger, Jonny Leather has decided to throw his hat in the highly competitive record label ring as founder of the Mecca Lecca Recording Company .  Employing the same name of his rather splendid blog, Jonny’s freshmen class includes six lesser known artists that are sure to become recognized acts in 2011. Those acts include Christopher Paul Stelling, Holas, Howth, Right on Dynamite, The Sanctuaries, & Unicycle Loves You.

A snippet of the initial press announcement reads, “we hope to join the ranks of the independent labels we love by consistently releasing intelligent, well-crafted music that doesn’t follow trends while maintaining a strong, unique personal relationship with our fans.”  If Jonny’s past endeavors are any indication, it is highly probable that the Mecca Lecca Label will handily succeed in its stated mission.

Q & A with Jonny Leather of Mecca Lecca Recording Company

Mark:  You’ve been promoting local artists and bands for several years in NYC and Brooklyn under various hats, why the move to form a label at this juncture?

Jonny: The label has definitely always been something I’ve wanted to do and considered doing. In the past I’d always step back from it out of fear, but this time the opportunity presented itself and it was too good to pass up. The fact that bands I really loved were expressing interest in the endeavor pushed me forward.

Mark:  How did this initial roster of artists come about?
Jonny: I’ve had a long standing relationship with pretty much all of the bands. My oldest brother plays drums in HØLAS. Christopher Paul Stelling and The Sanctuaries have both played a load of my concerts over the last two years. Unicycle Loves You are old friends who were very influential in motivating me to start the label. And Right On Dynamite is a band I’ve long been a fan of and have had the privilege to become friends with. All of them had albums in the works or already completed with no real outlet for release. So, rather than self-release or tear their hair out shopping their records to other labels, we decided to join together and form Mecca Lecca Recording Co..

Howth is the one band of the six initial bands on the roster that I haven’t known for multiple years. I discovered them earlier in the year and became obsessed with their record, which they had independently released via bandcamp. It quickly became one of my favorite records I’d heard in a long time and wanted to  do whatever I could to get it into the hands of a wider audience. Fortunately, they decided to sign on. Trailblazers: Amanda & Abbey of Golden Ratio Presents

TRAIL·BLAZ·ER

1. a person who blazes a trail for others to follow
through unsettled country or wilderness; pathfinder.
2. a pioneer in any field of endeavor

Golden Ratio Presents are impressive new kids on the proverbial block.  They are two talented and motivated friends, brought together by a clear passion for music and the bands playing out in Brooklyn.  As I sat down with them to drink hot beverages on a freezing cold night at Satellite Lounge in Williamsburg, I was struck by their sense of common purpose, and their knowledge of industry taste makers that comprise the music scene at large.  With this know how at their fingertips, they’ve booked rising bands such as The Forms, Xylos, Non Violence, Motel Motel, and Dinosaur Bones. All told, 2011 is sure to be a monumental year for these Golden Girls.

Name(s): Amanda Contrada & Abbey Ley
Job title(s): Co-Founders of Golden Ratio Presents
Since: 2010

How did your paths first cross?
Abbey: I was working the door at the Tennis show at Glasslands, and one of our bookers introduced me to Amanda.
Amanda: I was talking to Rami and Jake (the guys who run popgun and book Glasslands) about the Vodka Lemonades at Lodge and Abbey overheard us. She thought we were talking about the Vodka Lemonades at The Woods and said “ohmygod I love those!”.
Abbey: Oh, summer.. perfect Vodka Lemonade time! So initially it Jake who introduced us. We started chatting about bands and booking shows, and quickly realized we had a lot in common. When Amanda was leaving the show she said to me, “So, I don’t know a lot of girls in the music industry, we should be friends!” We met up for some of those Vodka Lemonades at Lodge shortly after and decided we should combine forces. We high-fived and started brewing up ideas.
Amanda: Abbey was booking live music at The Woods on Wednesday nights at the time, and I offered to share some of the responsibility.

How is the work divided up within Golden Ratio?
Abbey: I handle everything visual – design flyers, tour posters, our website. Amanda is putting together tours, routing dates. So those are the two separate things. Then we both collaborate on booking local shows. And tweeting.

Tell me what role your company plays in the scene right now?
Amanda: We just started up, but we’re doing a bit of everything on the booking side, it feels like. We’re just working on establishing our name right now and working with some amazing bands! Continue reading »

The Glasslands gallery ingeniously melds independent sound and art. A graffiti’d steel door tucked into the shadowy fringes of Williamsburg, The Glasslands gallery opens up into a Wonderland, where art and music are in constant dialog. Whose brains are behind this innovative sound-sight-feel experience? These lovely brains…
